Visit Gun Barrel City

Everything you need to plan a trip to the friendly little lake town on the eastern shore of Cedar Creek Lake.

Gun Barrel City is a small East Texas town built around one big attraction: Cedar Creek Lake. With more than 220 miles of shoreline and a compact, walkable commercial strip, it makes an easy weekend escape from the Dallas–Fort Worth metro — close enough for a day trip, laid-back enough to stay a while.

This page is your starting point. Below you'll find what to expect when you arrive, the best times of year to come, and a sample itinerary you can adapt to a single day or a full weekend. When you're ready to book a room or map your route, jump to our lodging guide and directions page.

What to expect

Gun Barrel City is the retail and commercial hub for the entire Cedar Creek Lake area, so nearly everything a visitor needs sits along State Highway 334, the main strip through town. Grocery stores, restaurants, marine supply shops, and services cluster here, which makes it a practical base even if you're staying at a rental farther out on the water.

The town itself is modest — about 6.63 square miles and home to roughly 6,190 year-round residents — but it wears its personality on its sleeve. The city slogan, "We Shoot Straight With You," and the emblem of a rifle flanked by two crossed antique pistols tell you plenty about the local sense of humor. Expect a friendly, unpretentious welcome rather than a resort atmosphere.

Best times to visit

The lake sets the calendar. The busiest stretch runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the summer boating season pushes the town's population past 10,000. This is when marinas hum, lakeside restaurants stay full, and the water sees the most activity — great energy, but also the biggest crowds and the highest demand for lodging.

If you prefer a quieter trip, aim for late spring or early fall. The weather is still comfortable, most businesses remain open, and you'll find more availability and better value on rentals. Anglers often favor the shoulder seasons too, when bass, crappie, and white bass fishing can be excellent and the lake is less congested. Winters are mild by national standards — one reason the area was named a Texas Certified Retirement Community in 2008.

A sample day or weekend

Use this loose itinerary as a template and stretch it to fit your schedule.

  • Morning: Start on the water. Launch a boat, book a guided fishing trip, or simply take in the lake from a public park or ramp. See our boating and fishing guides for access points and tips.
  • Midday: Grab lunch at a lakeside spot, then browse the shops and services along State Highway 334. Our dining and shopping pages point you in the right direction.
  • Afternoon: Cool off at a park, get back on the water, or explore nearby communities like Mabank, Seven Points, or Tool. History buffs can read up on the town's origins on our history page.
  • Evening: Watch the sun go down over the water, then settle in for dinner. If you're staying overnight, check the events calendar for markets, tournaments, and seasonal gatherings.

With two days, split your time between the lake and the land: dedicate one morning to boating or fishing and the other to parks, dining, and a slower exploration of the surrounding towns. For families, the parks and recreation guide is a good next stop.

Plan ahead for peak season

If you're visiting between Memorial Day and Labor Day — especially on a holiday weekend — reserve lodging early and expect a lively, crowded lake. Traveling midweek or in the shoulder seasons trades some of that energy for elbow room.
